    Instant Messaging

    You will need an instant messaging program in order to use this feature.  If you have a Macintosh, you can use iChat (pre-installed with Mac OS X) or Adium (a third party application). If you have a Windows or Linux machine, you can use Pidgin which can be downloaded for free or another Jabber client.

    iChat

    1. Open iChat.  iChat is found on the dock by default, but can also be accessed via the Applications folder.
    2. Open the iChat menu and select Preferences.
    3. Select the Accounts tab.
    4. On the left side, under the list of Accounts, click the + button to add a new account.
    5. A dialog box will open.  Select Jabber Account under Account Type.
    6. Enter your Account Name (i.e., YOUR_HRN_ID@hrn.stanford.edu).  Make sure both your HRN ID and the domain name (hrn.stanford.edu) are present.
    7. Enter your password.
    8. Click Done.

    Pidgin

    1. Open Pidgin.
    2. Open the Accounts menu and select Add/Edit.
    3. Click the Add button to add a new account.
    4. A dialog box will open. Select XMPP Account under Account Type.
    5. Enter your Screen name (i.e., YOUR_HRN_ID).
    6. Enter hrn.stanford.edu as the domain name.
    7. Enter your password.
    8. Click Advanced.
    9. In Connect port, type 5223.
    10. Click Save.
    11. Click Close.
