You will need an instant messaging program in order to use this feature. If you have a Macintosh, you can use iChat (pre-installed with Mac OS X) or Adium (a third party application). If you have a Windows or Linux machine, you can use Pidgin which can be
downloaded for free or another Jabber client.
iChat
- Open iChat. iChat is found on the dock by default, but can also be accessed via the Applications folder.
- Open the iChat menu and select Preferences.
- Select the Accounts tab.
- On the left side, under the list of Accounts, click the + button to add a new account.
- A dialog box will open. Select Jabber Account under Account Type.
- Enter your Account Name (i.e., YOUR_HRN_ID@hrn.stanford.edu). Make sure both your HRN ID and the domain name (hrn.stanford.edu) are present.
- Enter your password.
- Click Done.
Pidgin
- Open Pidgin.
- Open the Accounts menu and select Add/Edit.
- Click the Add button to add a new account.
- A dialog box will open. Select XMPP Account under Account Type.
- Enter your Screen name (i.e., YOUR_HRN_ID).
- Enter hrn.stanford.edu as the domain name.
- Enter your password.
- Click Advanced.
- In Connect port, type 5223.
- Click Save.

- Click Close.
